On 3 June, 2026 we held our first Family Business Policy Day. Bringing together policymakers, family business owners and policy experts, we had several engaging discussions on some of the most important policy priorities for family businesses.
In his opening speech, EFB’s President, Mr Jan K. van Oord provided insights into who Europe’s family businesses are and why they matter for Europe’s long-term competitiveness. He highlighted their long-term perspective, noting that they do not think in quarters, but in generations. He also highlighted the need for Eurostat to build a data set for family businesses measuring their presence across Europe emphasising that family businesses are invisible in data and therefore invisible in policy. His full speech can be accessed in the attached document.
The sessions offered valuable insights into several key policy priorities, including how to complete the Single Market, strengthening Europe’s resilience in a changing geopolitical environment, assessing the impact of tariffs and strategic dependencies on trade and businesses, exploring the “Made in Europe” versus “Made with Europe” question within the Industrial Accelerator Act, and ensuring the continuity of family businesses through successful business transfers.
Overall, the day provided a valuable platform for dialogue, fostering insightful discussions and the exchange of ideas on some of the most pressing issues facing Europe’s business and policy landscape.
